What are the different type of losses that need to be considered for power requirements?
You have to account for conduction loss, convection loss, and the radiation loss to be able to then gauge the losses from the part.
Conduction, convection, and radiation are the three types of losses that happen from a hot metal part. Conduction is very simple to visualize because it's wherever the hot part touches something that's cold, heat is lost. And the reason why it might touch something cold is that the holding fixture that holds the part will probably sink the heat away.
Convection loss, which is the second type of loss, is a little more esoteric. And this is the loss that is because of airflow around the part. Or if the part is moving, it generates heat loss because of the static air around it.
The radiation type of loss, which is the third type of loss, is the loss that happens at higher temperatures. Typically, above 1,000 degrees C is where the radiation loss becomes meaningful.
So you have to account for conduction loss, convection loss, and the radiation loss to be able to then gauge the losses from the part. plus the energy that is required to heat the part itself with that thermal mass equation to calculate how much energy is needed in the part. And then induction heating efficiency has to be put in, which typically is in the 70 to 80% range to get a good idea of the power supply that is needed.
