Note: Removing Rubber Bonded to a Ferrous Substrate

Objective:

To remove a rubber material that has been previously bonded to steel

End Product:

steel plate

Equipment:

Ambrell EASYHEAT 6.0 kW, 150-400 kHz induction heating system, equipped with a remote work head containing (2) 1.25 μF capacitors.

Materials:

Steel plate

Temperature:

700 °F (370 °C)

Frequency:

241 kHz

Testing:

A custom-designed three-turn oval helical coil was built to generate the required heating for the application. Initial tests were conducted to optimize the power delivered to the part. Once a satisfactory heat pattern was achieved in the time frame allowed, samples were run at multiple different settings.

Benefits:

  • Speed: Induction met the client's time requirements.

  • Repeatability: The client can expect the same result in the same amount of time every single time with induction heating. This is particularly critical for medical applications like this one.

  • Footprint: Induction takes up a modest footprint compared to other heating methods, and the workhead can be placed away from the induction heating system.

  • Safety: There is no open flame with induction heating.
