Objective:

Heat customer supplied steel bars for a preheat application for forging.

Equipment:

Ambrell EKOHEAT 200 kW induction heating system, equipped with a remote heat station with 150 µF total capacitance.

Materials:

Steel rods: ~1 in (~2.5 cm)

Temperature:

2000 °F (1093 °C)

Frequency:

8.6 kHz

Testing:

 A specially designed channel was used to provide the heat to the multiple samples provided. Initial tests were conducted to optimize the power delivered to the part and to understand the heating patterns achieved. After several changes and iterations on the coil setup the following data is collected from the testing.

  • Precise Heating: Induction can be applied almost exactly where it is needed without wasting heat where it isn't required.
