Note: Heating Copper and Nickel for Bending
Objective:
To heat copper and nickel parts for a bending application.
End Product:
Copper and nickel parts
Equipment:
Ambrell EKOHEAT 30 kW, 50-150 kHz induction heating power supply with a workhead and coil specifically designed for this application.
Materials:
Copper and nickel parts
Temperature:
1,500-1,800 °F (816-982 °C)
Frequency:
81 kHz
Testing:
A specially designed multiple-turn helical coil was used to provide heat to the parts. Initial tests were conducted to optimize the power delivered to the part and to understand the heating patterns achieved. After several changes and iterations on the coil setup to optimize the process, heat times of 10 seconds were achieved. A ceramic or non-conducting tube was used to isolate the parts from the coil.
Benefits:
-
Repeatability: Induction delivers the same result every single time, making it a repeatable solution which is critical for this process.
-
Speed: Induction has no warm-up time like an oven and can quickly come up to temperature. Induction met the client's timing objectives.
-
Footprint: Induction takes up a modest amount of floor space, especially when you consider that the workhead can be placed a distance away from the power supply.
-
Safety: Not only is induction heating efficient, it also offers safety advantages as there is no open flame.
