Note: Heating Non-Magnetic Steel Tubing
Objective:
To heat non-magnetic steel tubing; this is a new application for the client in the energy storage technology market.
End Product:
Steel tubing
Equipment:
Ambrell EASYHEAT 4.2 kW, 150-400 kHz induction heating power supply with a workhead and coil specifically designed for this application.
Materials:
Non-magnetic steel tubing 1.8 in (45.7 mm) OD
Temperature:
1112 °F (600 °C)
Frequency:
231 kHz
Testing:
A custom-designed single-position multiple-turn helical coil was built to generate the required heating for the application. Initial tests were conducted to optimize the power delivered to the part. An IR camera was used to observe the mesh temperature inside the tube. It was observed that the tube reached temperature within a minute. The mesh inside reached approximately 1022 °F (550 °C) within 5 minutes and remained at that temperature to 10 minutes, at which point the experiment was concluded.
Benefits:
-
Speed: Induction met the client's time objective for this heating application.
-
Repeatability: The client can expect the same result in the same amount of time every single time.
-
Heating Pattern: A good heating pattern was achieved during feasibility testing.
