Note: Heating a Steel Pan to Evaporate Water
Objective:
To heat a steel pan to boil and evaporate water; the client would integrate induction heating into their end product
End Product:
Equipment:
Ambrell EKOHEAT 50 kW, 15-45 kHz induction heating system and coil specifically designed for this application
Materials:
Steel pans
Temperature:
300 °F (148.9 °C)
Frequency:
33 kHz
Testing:
A multiple-turn pancake coil was designed to provide heat to the base of the steel pan. Initial tests were conducted to optimize the power delivered to the part and to understand the heating patterns. After several changes and iterations of the coil setup, one was chosen due to the ease of manufacturing and control.
Thermocouples were used to monitor the temperature at the base of the steel pan. Welding cloth was used to cover the coil and ensure sufficient isolation between the base and induction coil. The pan was then placed on top of the coil to minimize the distance between the coil and pan and maximize coupling efficiency. The feasibility of this application was confirmed through testing
Benefits:
-
Repeatability: Induction delivers the same result every single time, making it ideal for to be integrated into an end product.
-
Efficiency: Induction is highly efficient and delivers heat exactly where it is needed, making it a greener option.
-
Safety: Induction does not introduce a flame into the work environment and offers targeted heating
