Induction Application Objective

Brazing diamond cutting inserts to core bits is a critical process in the manufacture of concrete cutting tools. Traditionally performed using handheld torches, this method can be inconsistent, slower than alternative methods, and highly dependent on operator skill. Conversely, induction heating offers a controlled, repeatable alternative that improves both process efficiency and end-product quality.

The Brazing Application Challenge

Diamond cutting inserts must be securely brazed to steel core bits to withstand the extreme forces and temperatures encountered in concrete cutting applications. Achieving uniform heating at the joint is essential to ensure proper braze flow without damaging the insert or surrounding material. Flame-based brazing often struggles to deliver the consistency and repeatability needed for high-quality production.

Induction Heating Solution

In this application, an Ambrell EASYHEAT 4.2 kW induction heating system operating in the 150–400 kHz range was used to braze customer-supplied diamond steel inserts to concrete cutting core bits. The system was equipped with a remote workhead, enabling precise control of the heating process.

A custom-designed multiple-turn helical coil was developed specifically for this application to generate the required heating pattern. Initial testing focused on optimizing power delivery to the part, followed by trials at multiple operating settings once a satisfactory heat profile was achieved. The target brazing temperature for the process was 1400 °F (760 °C), reached using a frequency of approximately 211 kHz.

Proven Induction Results and Benefits

By replacing the handheld torch process with induction heating, the manufacturer achieved several key advantages:

  • Consistent and repeatable brazing

  • Elimination of open flames, improving workplace safety

  • Faster process times compared to traditional torch brazing

These benefits make induction heating an optimal solution for brazing diamond cutting inserts to core bits, particularly in production environments where quality, safety, and throughput are vital.

A Smarter Brazing Approach

Induction heating provides precise, localized heat exactly where it is needed—delivering reliable braze joints while reducing variability and operator dependence. For manufacturers looking to improve the performance and efficiency of core bit production, induction brazing offers a proven, scalable solution.
