THE LAB at Ambrell tested an induction soldering application involving heating both ends of a customer's copper float assembly. The client had been using a soldering iron, but was looking for a more precise and repeatable solution that could become part of an automated solution. THE LAB at Ambrell determined that an EASYHEAT™ 6 kW induction heating system was the right solution for their process and its requirements.

A custom-designed multiple-turn helical coil was built to generate the required heating for the application. Initial tests were conducted to optimize the power delivered to the part. Once a satisfactory heat pattern was achieved in the allowable time frame, samples were run at multiple different settings. A heat time of 24 seconds was used for the sample testing. THE LAB's testing confirmed the feasibility of the heating process using the Ambrell EASYHEAT system.

Using induction heating for soldering offers numerous benefits. As mentioned, the precision heating induction delivers is ideal for soldering, while induction is highly repeatable and can be integrated into an automated solution. Speed of heating is another key benefit as it can lead to improved throughput. Induction is also a comparative safe and efficient heating option.

This is just one of the many process heating applications that THE LAB at Ambrell analyzes. You can explore a full range of application notes from various industries on our website. And, of course, you can send in your parts for free testing.
