Induction Brazing a Copper Tube and Brass Fitting Assembly

Induction Brazing with an Ambrell EKOHEAT Power Supply

Objective

A company had been using a torch for a brazing application involving a copper tube and brass fitting, but they contacted THE LAB at Ambrell because they wanted to see if induction might be a better fit for their process. Speed and repeatability were the top reasons that they wanted to consider replacing their torch with induction heating.

Evaluation

THE LAB determined that an Ambrell EKOHEAT 50 kW, 5-15 kHz induction heating power supply with a custom-designed helical coil would meet the requirements of the application

Initial tests were conducted to optimize power delivery to the assembly and coil setup. Lab testing showed that the heat time was 3-4 minutes for this application with a 50 kW power supply. The coil design allows for parts to be placed inside the heating zone and then easily removed, making the process more efficient for the client.

Solution

As already highlighted, speed and repeatability were two reasons the client was assessing induction, and induction delivered on both fronts. With a torch, operator skill is critical, making consistency an issue at times. With induction they will see the same result time after time. Induction also delivers less heat into the work environment and there is no open flame, thus offering safety benefits. Finally, the expertise of THE LAB allowed the client to have peace-of-mind knowing their application would work prior to investing in induction equipment.

If you have an application you'd like tested by THE LAB at Ambrell, contact us today to take advantage of complimentary induction heating application testing. We'll send your parts back for inspection, along with passing along a video showing you the heating process. You can even visit us to view the testing live in our applications laboratory.More Brazing application notes
