Induction Soldering a Copper Fuse Assembly

Soldering a Copper Fuse Assembly

A customer contacted THE LAB at Ambrell because they needed to solder a copper fuse assembly. THE LAB determined that an Ambrell EKOHEAT 35 kW, 15-40 kHz induction heating power supply with a custom-designed multiple-turn helical and pancake coil would meet their objective.

Initial tests were conducted to optimize the power delivered to the assembly. Once a satisfactory heating result was achieved, the housing was heated in 2-3 minutes to achieve the solder reflow. The frequency for this application was 18 kHz.

Induction heating offered this customer several important benefits. First, the client was able to solder the assembly quickly, meeting their time objective. Induction is also a highly repeatable heating method, which ensures part quality. It's also very precise, meaning only the portion of the part that requires heating gets heated. In regards to safety, there is no open flame with induction heating. Finally, the expertise of THE LAB allowed the client to have peace-of-mind of knowing their application would work prior to investing in induction equipment.

If you have a soldering application you'd like assessed by our induction heating application experts, contact THE LAB to take advantage of free application testing. We'll send your parts back for inspection, along with passing along a video showing you the heating process. You can even visit one of our labs and view the testing live and in person.
